Apart from South-East Asian deployments, recon units had other commitments to support NATO, SEATO, and inter-American defence agreements. These FMF Atlantic Marines are instructed in the T10 parachute as part of a 1974 jumpmaster course for reconnaissance unit leaders. Note the insignia placement on M62 utilities, the standard field uniform throughout the 1970s. The olive green undershirt was a local affectation. (Coulter)

Headwear

Various headwear was available for recon when World War Two began, including khaki or sage green overseas caps, the sage green ‘Daisy May’ M36 utility hat, the khaki tropical sun helmet, a black rubberized fabric rain hat, and even the felt campaign hat. In 1943 the distinctive sage green herringbone utility ‘cover’ was introduced and became the common headwear, with and without the M1 helmet. This M43 cap was modified in the M44 version, which had a slightly more pronounced bill and a black printed eagle, globe and anchor printed on the front. Rank insignia could be fixed at the crown when not visible elsewhere. An attempt to mandate this in the 1980s met with resistance, and it remains an individual practice. When not in use the utility cover was folded and kept in the helmet liner. This cap was subsequently issued in herringbone material as the M56, and in olive green sateen as the M58; it was issued in ERDL3 camouflage in 1978, and woodland camouflage from 1982. A utility cover existed in desert camouflage, but was generally replaced by the desert hat.
